Unit 7: Narrative Project - Factory Lighting Tests

Below are screenshots of various lighting tests, some changes being more subtle than others. I was trying to get a balance between the warm lighting of the fire in the furnaces and cold lighting from the lights. I had to be careful not to make the scene too orange as this started creating a warm looking environment and we felt that the factory needed to remain harsh in places.

Environment UV Mapping and Texturing Progression

So here's what I've neglected to post for the last week, very stressful and taxing, but hopefully rewarding now. I’ve fully UV mapped and textured the 3D model of the environment, including paint effects. The props are also UV mapped and textured. The textures are soft and paintly to add to the atmosphere, quite a large number are hand painted. I tended to use real material images for the bump map to give it a contrast between art and real life. Below are the results. The lighting scene within the imagery is basic and is just used to give a soft atmosphere.

Unit 7: Narrative - Quick Texture Tests

Before starting to model the factory scene, I carried out some quick texture tests (not fully refined) just to get a rough idea of the style and what the textures would look like. I struggled achieving a painterly yet harsh style therefore, I tried to make them look more soft opposed to entirely painterly. By the end of this process I had modelled the entire factory therefore, began experimenting with textures on the actual model (as seen in the next post).

Painful Progression

So I've added in the trees finally, after a gruelling amount of experimenting! I'm fairly happy with the result and also satisfied with the lighting I created within the scene. I've started the UV Mapping but still have a way to go before I can start to texture.

Maya Experimentation

During our animation we need to have a water texture transform into steel, hence a Blend Colour Node is being explored, below are the results.

As the wish flower (thistledown) is the main focus for a fair part of our animation I thought I'd do a few quick render tests using Fur to see if this is a viable option. The first two images are far too thick and 'fluffy' looking, but I feel the next two images appear more successful - still not 100% there, but close to production quality.

As I was experimenting with the fur texture I decided to render the offset - below is a clip of the results. I quite like the effect and the idea of using it in the final animation, as each piece of fur is dispersed it represents Charles' imagination fading and reality setting in.
